Book Presentation in Class

On Wed, November 27th the class began to present the books chosen by individual student and based on that combined into groups. I’ve chosen "What color is your parachute". The book by Richard N. Bolles. I would say is a guide that takes you from the point in your life when you are a fresh graduated student, laid off from your recent job or just totally unhappy with what you are doing and finally decided that is time for changes. Three first chapters help you how to do the research of your interest, where and how to look as well as examples of author and people's that came across him experience.

The following part of the book teaches you the entire applying for job process, from creating a professional resume thru the interview itself and very helpful part about salary negotiations.
The book includes sections about starting your own business and how to get a job when you are over 50. A significant part of the book is dedicated to exercises, like for example your own skills evaluation
I recommend the book for these, who have no clue how to take the first steps to begin their adventure in the adults' world, however after seeing the presentation of "You majored in what?" seems like this book would be a better choice for me.

Doctors' Diaries

Over the past 21 years, NOVA has followed a group of seven doctors from their first day at Harvard Medical School in 1987. All young, bright and accomplished, none of them could have predicted what it would take, personally and professionally, to become a member of the medical tribe. In this special two-part program, NOVA returns one last time to get an update on the kind of doctors, and people, they have become.

In my opinion we all have some experiences that are similar to the stories of the seven doctors. However to become M.D. is a huge achievement that requires lots of study and practice.

I'm ENFJ...

The personality test we took at the beginning
of the semester resulted in my case as  ENFJ. Each of the letters stands for different characteristics of the personality: E-extrovert, N-intuition, F-feeling and J-judging.

Below, you can find some details about that combination:

-ENFJ’s direct their energy towards the outer world of actions and spoken words. They try to build harmony in important personal relationships. Their lives are organized on a personal basis, seeking to develop and promote personal growth in people they value.

-ENFJ Population
Total: 4%
Male: 2.5%
Female: 5.5%

Strength and weaknesses of ENFJ, this website it presents a list of the good and bad sides of being ENFJ and honestly most of them are true, for example:

 Strengths:
-Loyal and committed - they want lifelong relationships
-Strive for "win-win" situations
-Driven to meet other's needs
Weaknesses:
-Tendency to be smothering and over-protective
-Tendency to be controling and/or manipulative
-Don't pay enough attention to their own needs
-Tendency to blame themselves when things go wrong, and not give themselves credit when things go right

The link above takes you to the career areas that are good places to look for a suitable occupation if you are an ENFJ. When thinking about these, remember that your perfect job might not be here, and that there are other professions that can meet these criteria in general.

Dress to Impress...

It seems like putting a proper attire together it's not a big deal, however I believe we all have been in the situation, where we've missed some details or misunderstood the concept of the event. So, now that many of us are just about to enter the business world we should think twice before we leave the house for an interview or any work related event, so we don't look like that:

Bureau of Labor Statistic it's a trustworthy website with listed tips and advices. It takes you step-by-step, starting from preperations, with focus on personal appearance, the interview process itself and finishing  with a list of documents and informations that are needed during the interview.

If you can spend 4 minutes take a look at this interesting movie. It has tips of what to do and not, as well as how to prepare yourself if you don't have any experience or how to downgrade your skills for the potential job.

As an opposite to what we've been asked to do in class this is the 20 worst job interview questions ever. They seem silly but it's a way of learning something new and REALLY  find out what not to do...

how to write a good resume?

Below you find 3 options how to improve your resume:

1) #1 RESUME WRITING SERVICES, this website takes you to the 10 tips of successfully written resume in order to "generate more interviews and higher salary offers". Each tips provides an example of before/after section of a typical resume, plus a link to a website with many more resumes, ready to be present.
My interest brought the  tip#5, where it's told to analyze ads and job description to identify the key words. it seems like a good hint in creating a resume for this particular ad.

2) THE DAMN GOOD RESUME, website with lots of informations and useful tips. Provides a free resume template, to help you create your own resume. By following the steps through free resume templates you can create your own resume, including all necessary informations and choosing your own design and format.

3)BEST 10 RESUME WRITERS, Their website is divided into sections, besides the main page with additional links that take you to the process of "creating a resume". There are also sections with interesting articles about resumes; helpful already asked questions about the company.
However the website is more of a company providing a service of writing resumes than educational resource.

As you can tell there is plenty of websites, books, etc. with helpful tips to create a professional resume or simply just paid somebody to do so for you. But the question is if you have enough or the right qualities to include in your resume for the job you are applying???
